Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, has described his collaboration with coach Andy Murray as “surreal,” highlighting the unique transition from fierce competitors to a player-coach relationship. Speaking during the Miami Open, Djokovic expressed his astonishment at having one of his greatest rivals in his corner.
“It’s still surreal that one of my biggest rivals is my coach, and he’s fist-bumping and jumping around in the box,” Djokovic said. “Sometimes I pinch myself and ask, ‘Is this real? Is this a dream?’ but it’s great.”
The Serbian tennis star and the former world number one from Britain have known each other since their junior days, sharing the court for over two decades. Their professional rivalry has now evolved into a partnership where mutual respect and camaraderie are at the forefront.
“We shared the same stage and were on the tour for a very long time and know each other for 20-25 years since the junior days,” Djokovic noted. “But obviously when you’re rivals you don’t interact as much.”
Beyond the tennis court, the duo has been strengthening their bond through shared activities. “We played some golf, we enjoyed some dinners together, and we’re having fun,” Djokovic shared, emphasizing the importance of building a personal connection alongside their professional collaboration.
