The first tie of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals between Poland and Spain won’t go ahead as planned due to severe storms in the region.
The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals were set to start on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, with the first first-round tie set to be held between home nation Spain and Poland.
The event will be held at Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain, and these two countries were the only ones that were supposed to hit the court on the opening day of the tournament.
Poland is led by Iga Swiatek, who changed her decision about participation at the Billie Jean King Cup FInals. The World No. 2 is joined by Magdalena Frech, Magda Linette, Maja Chwalinska, and Katarzyna Kawa at the tournament, with Dawid Celt leading the team.
The Spanish team came very strong as well. Anabel Medina Garrigues leads the team as a captain, and the highest-ranked player is Paula Badosa, who is joined by Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Marina Bassols Ribera, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Both of these teams had to meet in a first-round tie, with the winner advancing to the quarter-final tie against the Czech Republic. The Czechs received a first-round BYE, advancing immediately to the quarter-final rounds.
However, the opening tie of the tournament won’t go ahead as planned, and that’s because of a ‘severe weather alert issued by local and regional authorities’ as said in a statement by the Billie Jean King Cup organizers.
