The tennis world is still buzzing after the surprising announcement that Andy Murray will be Novak Djokovic ’s new coach. Among the many reactions from players, Alex de Minaur admitted that he was “shocked” by the news.
The Australian star noted the symmetry of this collaboration with an event at the 2022 Laver Cup. In that tournament, Djokovic briefly coached Murray during one of the Scot’s singles matches. That event is best remembered as Roger Federer ’s farewell tournament.
The news about Novak (Djokovic) and Andy (Murray) was a real shock to the tennis world. It was crazy to see that. The first experience I had with Andy was when I played the Laver Cup against him. I came into the locker room and Andy was being coached by Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal) and Novak. For me, it was one of the most surreal moments of my life. I can’t imagine what that dynamic will be like yet. It will be fun to watch and I will be following it closely.
Djokovic is set to begin his 2025 ATP season at the Brisbane International. However, Murray will not be present there as part of Djokovic’s coaching team.
For now, Murray’s role as Djokovic’s coach is considered short-term, lasting until the end of the Australian Open. The two will decide whether to extend their partnership after the tournament concludes at Rod Laver Arena..
