Coco Gauff says visit to the Forbidden City brought her and Carlos Alcaraz ‘luck’ as they both won China Open

A visit to the Forbidden City brought Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz luck as they both ended up winning the China Open, believes the WTA star. She took on Karolina Muchova in the final in Beijing on Sunday (October 6) and comfortably beat her 6-1, 6-3.

The match was different from the previous two matches she played, where she dropped the first set. After the match, an ecstatic Gauff joked that visiting the Imperial Palace probably was the reason behind her and Alcaraz’s win. Both Gauff and Alcaraz, before their respective China Open opening match, dressed in traditional clothes and explored the historic site.

Alcaraz, who arrived in Beijing following his second-round defeat at the US Open and after guiding Team Europe to the Laver Cup, easily went past his opponents until he met Jannik Sinner in the final. Alcaraz lost the first set after a tie-break but won the second and, after another tie-break in the third round, where he also won seven back-to-back points despite being down 0-3, he won his fifth title of the season.
