Jordan Spieth, one of golf’s most recognizable young stars, once admitted that he “didn’t care that much” for legendary golfer Phil Mickelson — at least not early in his career. While the two now share mutual respect as accomplished professionals on the PGA Tour, Spieth’s candid remarks revealed that his early impressions of Mickelson were not entirely positive.
In an honest reflection during a past interview, Spieth explained that, growing up, he didn’t gravitate toward Mickelson’s style or persona. “I didn’t care that much for Phil for the longest time,” Spieth said, noting that as a junior golfer, he saw Mickelson as more of an enigmatic showman than a relatable role model. Mickelson’s unpredictable, go-for-broke style seemed too flashy and inconsistent for Spieth’s taste at the time.
However, as Spieth matured and began competing on tour, his perspective changed. Sharing practice rounds, locker rooms, and tournament pressure with Mickelson gave him insight into the Hall of Famer’s deep knowledge of the game and his generous mentorship behind the scenes. Spieth eventually came to appreciate Mickelson’s unique approach and character.
“Once I got out here and got to know him a little bit, I realized how smart he is about the game and how much he helps younger guys,” Spieth said. “He’s been really good to me.”
Their evolving relationship is a testament to how first impressions can change with experience and exposure. Today, Spieth is among those who publicly acknowledge Mickelson’s contributions to the sport — not just as a champion, but as a leader and mentor in the golfing world.
