World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, a formidable force in women’s tennis with five Grand Slam titles to her name, is yet to clinch a tournament victory in the 2025 season. Despite reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open and three WTA 1000 events, her coach, Wim Fissette, has pinpointed a crucial area needing refinement: her serve.

Following Swiatek’s recent defeat by Jelena Ostapenko, a player against whom she has struggled, Fissette acknowledged the ongoing efforts to enhance the Pole’s service game. While training sessions have shown promising progress, translating that consistency to match conditions remains a key focus.

“After Miami, we made some adjustments to the preparation of the serve,” Fissette explained. “During the training on the court, it works very well. In the match with Jelena Ostapenko, Iga was a bit tense at the beginning. When she entered the match, it was much better.”

However, Fissette highlighted the inconsistency that has plagued Swiatek’s serve in recent outings. “In some matches, she served very well, in others, the first serve was missing,” he noted. “So, this element fluctuates, and it is normal that we pay a lot of attention to it. We spent a lot of time on it. It is definitely something that we would all like to see improvement in. We work on it every day.”

Fissette, who joined Swiatek’s team in October of the previous year, brings a wealth of experience, having previously coached Grand Slam champions like Naomi Osaka and Kim Clijsters. His coaching philosophy emphasizes a positive approach, focusing on reinforcing a player’s strengths while addressing areas for improvement. He believes in tailoring his methods to each player’s unique mindset and fostering a strong team environment.

As Swiatek prepares for the Mutua Madrid Open, where she faces a challenging first-round opponent in Alexandra Eala, the focus on solidifying her serve will be paramount. Despite the setbacks, both Swiatek and her coach remain optimistic about the ongoing improvements. “I am convinced that it will get better step by step,” Fissette assured.
