Novak Djokovic Issues Apology Following Monte-Carlo Masters Defeat
In a surprising turn at the Monte-Carlo Masters, unseeded Chilean Alejandro Tabilo defeated Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, maintaining his perfect record against the 24-time Grand Slam champion. This marks Tabilo’s second consecutive straight-set victory over Djokovic, following a win in Rome the previous year.
Djokovic, who had received a bye into the second round and was aiming for his 100th Tour-level title, committed 29 unforced errors during the match. In a brief and somber press conference afterward, he expressed his frustration and disappointment, stating, “I expected myself at least to have put in a decent performance. Not like this, it was horrible.” He further apologized to the spectators, saying, “A horrible feeling to play this way, just sorry for all the people that have to witness this.”
Despite the defeat, Djokovic downplayed concerns about his physical condition, mentioning only minor issues with his arm and eye that he deemed insignificant. Looking ahead, he identified Roland Garros as his primary objective for the clay season. His next competition is scheduled to be the Madrid Open, taking place between April 21 and May 4.
This early exit adds to Djokovic’s recent string of unexpected losses, marking his third early elimination in his last four tournaments. The 37-year-old missed the chance to become the only player to win each Masters event at least three times.
