Carlos Alcaraz says the Paris Masters organisers have done something ‘crazy’ which he doesn’t understand after goin

The Spaniard suffered an early exit in the French capital on Thursday night, courtesy of Ugo Humbert.

The 26-year-old thrived on the support from his home fans and produced the best performance of his career to secure his biggest win so far.

Alcaraz and Humbert have played one another three times in 2024 and after two defeats, the Frenchman has secured his first win over the 21-year-old and he achieved it in his home country.

What does Carlos Alcaraz not understand about the 2024 Paris Masters?

Carlos Alcaraz was one of the players most vocal about the court speed at the Paris Masters. It has been well documented that speed of the courts at the final Masters 1000 of the year are the quickest they have been in 10 years.

In fact, they have the quickest courts across the Masters 1000 this year, and Alcaraz can not fathom why the change was made.

“I don’t want to say something that there is going to sound like an excuse. You know, first of all, Ugo deserves to win, that’s obvious. But it depends,” the Spaniard told reporters post-match.

“Because I play, for example, the Davis Cup indoor court, and the court was way slower than this one. So, I mean, when I played the first match, the stats came out that it is the fastest court in the Masters 1000, probably on the tour right now.

“This is crazy. I don’t know. Probably the fastest one in the last ten years in this tournament. So I don’t know why they do it. I don’t know why they have changed a lot, you know, a court from other tournaments and obviously in the same tournament, comparing to other yet.

“So it surprised me a little bit, so I came here with not too many days. Probably I had to come earlier to get used to these conditions but I didn’t. But, you know, honestly all I can say is I don’t understand why they did it.”

Carlos Alcaraz reacts to Paris Masters defeat

Alcaraz and Humbert produced an exhilarating encounter at the Paris Masters as they battled for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Humbert stormed through the first set with the loss of just one game, before Alcaraz levelled proceedings.

The atmosphere reached fever-pitch during an evenly-contested third set, before Humbert raised his level to win the final two games and produce a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win.

Assessing the defeat, Alcaraz said: “I think I could play better. I think that’s obvious. But with the level that I had today, I think I competed, I gave everything,” Alcaraz said in his post-match press conference.

“I fought until the last point. I have to congratulate Ugo. I think his performance has been really high. The way he hits the ball is unbelievable. It’s amazing.

“I think every time that he plays against me, I feel like he increases his level. He plays a really high level of tennis. I think in Paris even more so. So congratulations to him, and good luck.
