Brooke Henderson Needs a Trip to Texas — And a Putting Lesson (Plus Tequila) from Ben Crenshaw
Brooke Henderson’s golf game is in excellent shape — at least from tee to green. Her drives are long and accurate, her iron play remains among the best on the LPGA Tour, and her composure under pressure hasn’t wavered. But there’s one part of her game that continues to hold her back from truly dominating: the putter.
If there’s anyone who knows how to tame the greens and find a smooth, confident stroke, it’s Ben Crenshaw — the Texas legend affectionately known as “Gentle Ben.” A two-time Masters champion and widely regarded as one of the greatest putters in golf history, Crenshaw possessed a touch on the greens that bordered on magical. His stroke was simple, natural, and, most importantly, unshakeable under pressure.
So here’s a thought: Brooke, book a flight to Austin. Pack a putter, a notebook, and maybe a bottle of tequila — for the nerves, of course — and spend a weekend learning from a master.
It’s not just about technique. Crenshaw’s genius on the greens was as much mental as it was mechanical. He believed in rhythm, trust, and instinct — elements that might help Henderson unlock the fluid confidence she needs when standing over short putts. With so much of the modern game focused on stats, strokes-gained, and mechanical fixes, perhaps what Brooke really needs is a little old-school wisdom and a reset of feel.
Of course, Henderson doesn’t need a total rebuild. She’s still one of the top players in the world. But when every part of your game is strong except one, even small tweaks can make a world of difference. The frustration is visible, and so is the desire to improve. She’s close — really close. A putting breakthrough could unleash a stretch of dominance the tour hasn’t seen from her in years.
Ben Crenshaw once famously said, “I’m a big believer in fate. I think things happen for a reason.” Maybe fate is telling Brooke it’s time to go to Texas, get some putting insight, and, while she’s at it, enjoy a calming sip of tequila.
